How the AI generation market works

The same model — say Kling or Veo — can cost three or four times as much depending on where you run it. That's not a scam; it's because the market has layers, and each layer sells a different thing on top of the raw model. Understanding the layers is the fastest way to stop overpaying.

1. Direct providers

The company that made the model sells access to it via API: Google for Veo, OpenAI for Sora, Black Forest Labs for FLUX. This is the reference price — the number everyone else starts from and marks up. The catch: you often need approval, higher minimums, or infrastructure to call them directly.

2. Aggregators

Platforms like fal, Replicate and WaveSpeed resell dozens of models through one clean API, pay-per-use, in plain dollars. You pay a small markup over direct pricing in exchange for one integration, one bill, and no approvals. Best for developers and for anyone whose usage is irregular.

3. Creative platforms

Higgsfield, OpenArt and Krea's app wrap models in a full interface — timelines, characters, editing — and sell access through a credit system. You buy a subscription or a credit pack and spend credits per generation. The credit-to-dollar rate is where it gets murky, which is exactly what ModelPricer converts for you. Best if you work inside their tools regularly.

4. GPU cloud

Services like RunPod and Vast.ai rent you the raw hardware by the hour. You install and run the models yourself (often via ComfyUI). No per-generation markup at all — but you manage everything. This only wins at high volume, and it's priced in GPU-hours, not per generation, so it's a different calculation entirely.

So where should you generate?

If you just want the cheapest run of a specific model, compare aggregators and creative platforms side by side — that's what the ModelPricer calculator does, converting every credit system into real dollars. If you generate in huge volume and can run your own pipeline, GPU rental may beat everyone. And if you're building a product, going direct to the provider removes the middleman markup once you clear their requirements.

ModelPricer verifies prices across these platforms several times a day from official sources.
